What is a PLC and What Does It Do?

A programmable logic controller(PLC) is an industrial digital computerthat has been ruggedized and adapted for the control of manufacturing processes, such as assembly lines, or robotic devices, or any activity that requires high reliability control, ease of programming and process fault diagnosis. What is SCADA?

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition(SCADA) is a control systemarchitecture that uses computers, networked data communications and graphical user interfaces for high-level process supervisory management. But SCADA systems use other peripheral devices such as programmable logic controllers and discrete PID controllers to interface to the process plant or machinery. With SCADA, the operator through the HMI can monitor the system and issue commands vital to maintaining the overall process. What is an HMI?

A Human-Machine Interface (HMI) is the user interface that connects an operator to the controllerfor an industrial system.  An HMI includes electronic components for signaling and controlling automation systems.  For example, through the HMI, an operator can see schematics of the systems and turn switches and pumps on or off or raise or lower temperatures.
